The Root Cellar is a new extension of a San Marcos brand, a modern progressive bistro dressing down as a country cafe, with distressed wood barn-itecture inside and out and the kind of antiques you’d find on the town’s central square. Cocktails, mocktails, beer and wine elbow for space on the table with hibiscus iced tea and bottomless cups of coffee. And there’s enough overlap between breakfast and lunch that your chicken-fried steak and eggs can share space with meatloaf and mashed potatoes while you catch sight of the kids and young parents playing in the oak-shaded park space just across the parking lot. It’s nicer than most public parks, but it’s part of the restaurant, an extension for chef-prepared picnics and not a bad place to wait for a table in the fall.

The chicken-fried steak is a rib-eye, wide and thin, with breading the color and texture of the Sonoran desert, curled around the edges to form a natural basin for jalapeño cream gravy that works just as hard as the steak. The eggs are the kind you pay extra for at the grocery store, their yolks as orange as the sunrise, a sunrise you can soak up with a toasted crumble-core biscuit that fills the palm of your hand. The meatloaf is content to walk on the mild side, safe under its shroud of tangy tomato gravy, leaning against a tower of buttery skin-on mashed potatoes. The menu threads the needle between small-town diner and a city bar and grill, with breakfast, burgers, pasta, sandwiches, salads and a few main-course curveballs for breakfast, lunch and dinner six days a week.
